Tour Director news

1. Registration for Day Tours

Registration for day tours is fast and easy.  We ask that you RSVP for any ride you will be attending. It does not matter if the ride is remote or not. Those intending to attend any ride, regardless of the start location, will be asked to RSVP, using the "Register” button in the ride details.  To avoid instances of people registering too far in advance and then forgetting about it, registration for each ride will only become available/active 2 weeks prior to the ride date. After you register for a ride, you will automatically receive an email giving you full details about the ride for which you registered. You may also receive notices by email from your tour leader, if there are any last minute changes, cancellations, special instruction etc. This has proven to be an excellent feature of the new website and has been extremely well received by participants and Tour Leaders alike.

2. The Rides (May 21-27)

Changes in the tour schedule may occur at short notice. Please check the Club Calendar on the website, as well as your email, prior to heading to a start location. Typically, Bike Shorts Extras will not be sent out for cancellations or short notice ride additions. Instead, cancellations and additions will be reflected on the calendar, as soon as the Tour Director or Assistant Tour Director is notified. Additionally, if a ride gets cancelled or changed, you will be notified by email, providing you have registered on it using the “Register” button.

Tour leaders are reminded to contact the Tour Director at: tour-director@knbc.ca if any changes are required to their ride.

Full details on all rides can be found on the KNBC Club Calendar of rides and events on the KNBC website. The KNBC Calendar, containing the most up to date info on your rides, is located at https://knbc.ca/page-18460

5.  Wednesday Evening Mystery Rides Returning 22 May

Commencing Wednesday 22 May, please join us on Wednesday evenings at Centrepointe for impromptu tours of 90 to 120 minutes, followed by socializing at the Royal Oak pub.

L1, L2, L3 L4 and L5 speed groups will be arranged at the start depending on turnout.

Start = 6:15 pm, behind the Royal Oak Pub 117 Centrepointe Drive.

Please Note: These are impromptu rides.  As such, they are not formally organised and have no pre-determined leader(s) or routes. That's all part of the "mystery" and what makes these rides such a fun hit.

They are also weather dependent.

Generally speaking, if the weather looks very questionable, there is a good chance there will be reduced numbers (if any) of the tour leaders showing up to volunteer to lead a group.

Since they are impromptu, they appear as a standing entry in the calendar -meaning they are never really formally cancelled, because they are never really formally organised.  Members are expected to use their own judgement in deciding to attend or not.

If you get there and discover the weather is not good enough for cycling, you can always skip the ride and go straight to the social part at the Royal Oak ;-).

6. Safety tip from Monna – Riding in a group - but thinking like an individual

Sometimes when riding in a group, we turn off the brain and mindlessly follow the person in front of us. With 80% of accidents occurring at intersections - it is imperative we stay alert and take ownership of our own personal safety when crossing or turning at an intersection. What might have been adequate time for the folks in front - may no longer be the case. Be sure to assess each situation individually and make the safe decision for you.

7. Diversions

What to be safer on the road? Be more social when riding with a group? Have more fun? In this 31/2-hour clinic, we’ll practice basic skills to help you ride safer with more confidence. We’ll also learn basic group riding skills, so we can be more comfortable riding together as a group. The clinic is for both new and experienced KNBC members. Tuesday, June 4, 7-9 pm, Organizing and leading a multi-day tour

KNBC members who have organized and/or lead multi-day tours will discuss the steps involved in creating a multi-day tour. These are very popular with KNBC members. They all fill up very quickly and are a great way to get to know other members.  The club could use more multi-day tours.

So come out and learn how easy it is to organize a tour and meet fellow members who can help you do this. Learn about resources already on the club’s website.

Calendar legend

When checking the Weekly and Monthly calendars, you'll notice some of the Rides/Events have different colours. Here's what they mean:

Blue - Normal ride entry

Green - Something in the initial ride entry has changed. Maybe the time or location. If you had planned on taking this ride, best to check the entry again for what changed.

Red - Ride is Cancelled. This spring, weather conditions caused a lot of cancellations.

Brown - Social or non-ride events. Examples are the training sessions, New Members Welcome Night, club picnic, etc.

Salmon (light red) - Multi day tours are shown as an FYI. No registration is possible.

Ride Registration

When registering for rides, please DO NOT de-select the "Show registration on event registrants list" checkbox. By doing so you show up as an Anonymous rider.  Since our tour leaders use this information to pre-populate their sign-in sheets, we will reset this field.

Website Stats

Some cool stats for you, we’re still averaging 1000 page hits per day. The 3 most popular non-home-page destinations are the Monthly Calendar, Upcoming Rides Calendar, and the Weekly Calendar. We are popular though, we’ve had 9 hits from the US, 4 from Russia, 2 from Togo, 1 from Australia, 1 from China, and 1 from Italy.

9. KNBC at Cyclofusion

On Saturday May 19, KNBC volunteers and our wonderful tent were present at the Cyclofusion. This event celebrated the beginning of the Nokia Sunday bikedays. Thanks to Roy for helping to set up and take down the tent. Big thanks to Virginia for staying all morning to keep me company, handing out business cards and generally schmoozing with the public. It was cool and windy but still a worthwhile event for the club to be at. Next year the organizers better have coffee available!
