2. Tour Director News – Lessons Learned

We have learned a few lessons recently. In the current conditions, it is a good idea to bring with you all the food and water that you will need for the day. In the heat wave we had ten days ago, two water bottles were not sufficient for a 50km ride. We also learned that everyone needs basic navigational skills. We can’t rely on the leader as some sort of god. Each of us needs to be able to find our way back. If you have a smart phone, it may be all that you need, but you have to verify that is the case. The next time that you are in the middle of nowhere, far from the city, check to see if you can find where you are using your smart phone. Can you bring up the maps that will guide you back? If not, you may need to have a printout of the RidewithGPS route, a map of Eastern Ontario and a map of West Quebec with you when you ride with KNBC. You might also want to carry the NCC Cycling Map, which shows all the bike trails in Ottawa and Gatineau. The NCC maps are usually available at bike stores.
