Quote of the week: “In the context of the great debates about identity politics – are you gay or straight, nationalist or republican, British or English and so on – I would ask, “Do you ride a bike?” I love everything about the machine – the sensation of the tyres on the road, the mobility – and I love the fact that you have this intimate relationship with the elements, and the landscape.” Beatrix Campbell, British writer

2. Tour Director News
Before heading out for a club ride, check your bike, tire inflation and wear. There has been a rash of flat tires recently on club rides. Members are reminded that they should always carry at least one spare tube and/or a patch kit when riding. Although on day tours usually someone will have a small tire pump it is a good idea to carry your own. CO2 inflators are an option, they work well but they are a one shot device.
Cooler weather and better cycling conditions are finally here. I urge current, past and potential new tour leaders to consider submitting ride proposals. The immediate goal is to get as many rides for next week as possible. Ride proposals for the upcoming week that are received by Sunday will be included in Bike Shorts. Please send your ride proposals to tour-director(at)knbc.ca
4. Safety Tip from Monna – ABC Quick check: how to ensure your bike is safe to ride everyday
We all need to get in the habit of doing an 'ABC Quick check', to ensure our bike is safe to ride BEFORE heading off, esp. if we are at a remote start.
'A' - is for Air: ensure your tires are properly inflated, and in good shape with no cuts or abrasions; 'B' is for Brakes: ensure your brake blocks are flat, flush, and properly positioned over wheels; 'C' is for Chain: (Chain, cogs & cranks and cables): ensure your chain is clean, lubed, adjusted and actually in position. Also ensure all cables are not worn or frayed; 'Quick' is for Quick Release: ensure your skewers are tight and pointed in, protected by positioning them flush with the forks; and 'Check' is for a final Check: Lift the bike a few inches off the ground and drop it. Listen for any loose parts, and tighten as necessary:
- seat height is adjusted properly;
- cranks and pedals are solid; and
- racks, lights, bell, water bottle holder(s).
