3. Safety Tip From Monna - O'Connor Bike Lane - DON'T use it!

As I said in my Annual Report, decisions regarding infrastructure spending are seemingly being made by people having little or no cycling experience. And, as we are seeing, cyclists are paying the price. Two major safety conventions have been breached with the introduction of this two way bike lane: slower moving traffic is no longer on the right hand side of the road, and, to make it worse; two way bike traffic has been introduced on one-way street! No amount of green paint and signage can be expected to protect the cyclist, nor immediately educate the motorist with this huge variation to the driving norm.

Add to this the shorter daylight hours, and, as we are seeing, it is a recipe for disaster.

While construction continues to be a challenge in the downtown core - there still remain numerous safer options for traveling north - south.

Safety culture is extremely difficult to change - we have a long way to go before we all really share the road. In my opinion, as a cyclist, this is a risk not worth taking.

4. REMINDER: RSVP DEADLINE: November 14, 2016 - A Night at the Theatre: Thursday 29 December 2016

KNBC's very own Susan Monaghan takes to the stage again and will even be dancing! See her Thursday 29 December 2016 at the Ron Maslin Playhouse in Kanata in "High School Musical" by Peter Barsocchini and directed by Clare Flockton. Tickets will be $10 and guests are welcome.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.”

6. European Tours 2017

With apologies for not posting all the information Tim passed on to me last week...

A group of us are examining several options for Europe this summer. Please note that these will not be KNBC sponsored tours, but rather tours arranged by a couple of people who are offering others the opportunity to join them. Each person is responsible for their own financial arrangements, and the organizers do not accept any liability for their safety. The tours will be supported by a sag wagon, which will transport baggage from hotel to hotel, and act as an emergency recovery vehicle

There are three possibilities, two to Croatia and one to France..

The two tours to Croatia will follow the same route. We will fly into Zagreb, spend the first night in a hotel near the airport and set out on our bikes the next morning. We will spend four days travelling inland from Zagreb to Split,. From split we will cycle 6 days north along the coast into Slovenia, adding one day as a rest day at a location to be determined. From our northern point of Izola ,Slovenia we will spend three days returning to Zagreb through Slovenia.

If you have access to a map of Croatia, the preliminary plan is to spend nights in Jospidol, Bjelopolje, Knin, Split, Sibenik, Zadar, Prizina, Rijeka, Pula, Izola Slovenia, Ljubljana, Dolnje Mokro Polje and Zagreb. These locations are subject to change based on the availability of accommodations.

Of note is that Croatia has its own currency while Slovenia uses the Euro

Air Transat, which is our preferred airline, only flies once a week to Zagreb, so we are limited in our dates.

The first trip will occur 6 – 21 June

The second trip will occur 5 – 20 Sept. This trip is currently fully booked, but we will hold a stand by list.

The third option is a version of the first trip done by the group riding from Paris to Nice. Dates for this are 7 – 22 June, but these are flexible since. Air Transat has several flights each week to Paris and at least two a week returning from Nice . Our trip includes the possibility of climbing Les Alpes d’Huez, a major climb on many of the Tour De France and an incredibly beautiful ride through Les Gorges de Verdon. This trip will include a day off in Annecy which is a charming village with many canals.

You can get a flavour of this trip by looking at our blog from 2011 which includes lots of pictures . Go to

If you are interested in any of these trips, and have not already done so, please advise Tim Sparling ( by 25 November. At this point you are only expressing interest, but as soon as I start to book accommodations I will be asking you to make your first contribution to the common cost fund of $100. Total common costs are normally between $4-500 .

Historically total costs for the France trip should be between $3000-3500 depending on how much you spend on food and wine.

Air fares to Croatia are more expensive so I would plan on a cost closer to $4000
